The Development of the Flood in the Halo Franchise
There are quite a number of science fictions that have the element of an alien species whose only instinct is to consume every other living being. One of those is my topic, the Flood of the Halo franchise. The Flood are a kind of parasite creature that rely on consuming other life forms to grow and reproduce. They are able to take control of, mutate and gain the memory and knowledge of their hosts. As they grow, they will become more and more unstoppable because of their number and intelligence. There are four distinct but continuous stages of the Flood development.
The first stage is the Feral Stage. During this stage, the behavior of the Flood is “Feral”. They attack with no strategies, focusing on consuming as many living beings as possible. The Flood has many forms. In this stage, there are the Infection, Combat and Carrier Forms. And in the very beginning, there’re only the Infection Forms. The Infection Forms are small but deadly creatures that can instantly kill or infest the victims upon physical contact with their tentacles. Although they are easy to kill, they usually gather in a large swarm, making them incredibly dangerous. After they have taken over their hosts, they will begin to mutate the body. When the mutation is completed, this means that the hosts are killed and the bodies are completely taken over by the Infection Forms. They are now the Combat Forms, fighting other life forms with their mutated body part or using weapons based on their former hosts’ memory. They can also continue to mutate into Carrier Forms, able to explode and send the Infection Forms within them far and wide. Infesting other creatures is not their only goal. They will also gather corpses of their victims and collect biomass from them in order to create an intelligent being called as the Gravemind. Once the Gravemind has fully grown, then the first stage is over.

Combat Form. This one is mutated from a human. It can use a weapon because of the memory of its dead host.

Infection Forms. The original form of the Flood. Small but deadly. They usually come in large numbers.

Carrier Form. Contain several Infection Forms within each individual. Explode themselves to send the small guys far and wide. They are slow, but they might be right behind you if not careful enough.
The second stage is the Coordination Stage. During this stage, the Flood population will grow at a more rapid pace because of the presence of the Gravemind. The Gravemind is brain of the Flood. It has all the memory and knowledge gathered by the Flood. Because of its intelligence, the Flood are now organized and able to fight with strategies and tactics, which make them more lethal and spread the infestation even faster. In addition, they now are able to produce a new form called as the Pure Form. Rather than mutating a host, Pure Form are created with the biomass collected from corpses. They are more resilient and have several sub-forms for different purposes. At this point, the Flood infestation will only spread faster and faster and ultimately consume the entire star system. Once the Flood have acquired the technologies needed to travel to other star systems, they will continue to the next stage.

Pure Form. Sub-Form: Tank. Slow but incredibly resilient. They have hardened claw arms. You don't want to get hit by one of those things.

Gravemind. Brain of the Flood. The ultimate Intelligence. This is the scene where the Gravemind is communicating with the protagonist of the Game.
The third and the final stage is the Interstellar Stage and the Intergalactic Stage. Once the Flood have reached the Interstellar Stage, they have already consumed many planets with their fleets, and they will move on to consume one star system after another. If they cannot be stopped, they will eventually conquer an entire galaxy and consume all the other life forms and the technology that was present. They’ll have to leave to another galaxy to further spread their infestation and grow. This the final stage, Intergalactic Stage. By this point, they are nearly unstoppable and the entire universe is basically theirs.
Although many other science fictions have similar ideas, the Flood stand out to be one of the most famous. Their infestation has four stages, and their army will grow significantly stronger and more dangerous with each stage passed. They are the enemy of all other life forms. If they are allowed to continue their consumption, the war against them will only become more challenging for every other being. When they have reached a critical mass, all can only hope for the best.
